TMC letter to Sen Clinton (D-NY) thanking for her support as the sponsor of S. 2602, which would allow retention of Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for surviving spouse who remarry after age 55. A similar TMC letter was sent to Sen Hutchison (R-TX) thanking her for her support as an original cosponsor. Finally, TMC letters were sent to all Senators who are not cosponsors of S. 2602, urging their support.

The Military Coalition provided a letter strongly supporting Senator Ensign's (and Rep. Cardin's) legislation that waives the Medicare Part B late enrollment penalty for military retirees who are otherwise eligible for Tricare for Life and establishes a special enrollment period during 2003 for beneficiaries not now enrolled in Part B to do so. Ensign's legislation, in conjunction with Rep. Ben Cardin's bill H.R. 2073, helps open TRICARE for Life on an equitable basis without severe penalties of late enrollment fees.

The Military Coalition urges Senators to become cosponsors of a bill, S.2233, that would test using Medicare funds in VA health care facilities for the care of veterans who are Medicare eligible.

Coalition letter to the Internal Revenue Service expressing support for an administrative remedy to provide relief to uniformed services and Foreign Service members under the current homeowners capital gains tax exclusion provisions of Internal Revenue Code, Section 121. The law requires that the member occupy his/her principal residence for 2 of the last 5 years to qualify for the $250,000 ($500,000 per couple) capital gains tax exclusion. The Coalition supports the American Bar Association recommendation that suspends, for time spent away from home on government orders, the five year period during which ownership and use requirements must be met.

Coalition letter to Rep Jeff Miller (R-FL), thanking him for assuming the sponsorship of H.R. 548, the Military Survivor Benefits Act of 2001. H.R. 548 would increase the Survivor Benefit Plan basic annuity to 40% of covered retired pay immediately, to 45% in 2004 and to 55% in 2011.

This bill would repeal the current Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) - Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) offset for widows of disabled military retirees who die from service connected causes.
